Magnetic Locks, Delay Egress Systems, Shear Magnetic Locks, Standard Magnetic Locks
Magnetic locking devices from brand name manufacturers such as Security Door Controls (SDC), Locknetics, and Securitron can help your facility's access needs. There are a few primary types of maglocks that fit a wide variety of applications. This page will give a brief description of magnetic locking products.

Smart Maglocks and
Delay Egress Systems
Maglocks are available with a variety of onboard circuit boards
which are capable of multiple functions.
Manufacturers such as Locknetics, Security Door Controls (SDC),
and Securitron have made significant advances in locking technology.
Features such as these are common in the more advance magnetic locks
- Audit trail capability
- Delay egress systems built in
- Forced door and propped door alarms and outputs
- Ability to have multiple users at an opening (100 unique codes with audit capability for instance)
- Ability to require credentials at an opening (Proximity or magnetic stripe cards for instance)
- Multi door control via computer uplink
- Built in egress sensors

Shear Maglocks

Typical maglocks use a pull principle in order to achieve their
holding force. A shear maglock typically uses mechanical
locking tabs and grooves in order to increase its holding force.
The advantages of shear maglocks:
- Can be installed in a mortise configuration (concealed) or surface
- Concealed installation offers better security and appearance
- Greatly higher holding force (typically 2,500 lbs or more)
- Available as surface mount units
Standard
maglocks
While the smart and shear maglocks are extremely advanced the
standard maglocks have not changed very much over the past 20 years.
This consistency has allowed manufacturers to focus on such things
as lowering power consumption while providing higher holding forces.
A standard type magnetic lock offers advantages over mechanical
hardware:
- Long lasting performance (no moving parts)
- Silent operation
- Low installation costs (compared to smart maglocks and shear maglocks)
- Wide variety of mounting configurations (offset strike, inswing, outswing)
Egress devices (Request to Exit)
Every time an electronic locking device is installed we need to
consider access and egress. Egress devices are always required
when using magnetic locks. Without an egress device the
magnetic lock will not know when to unlock. A variety of
egress devices are common and depending on the location of the
installation will be required to meet local codes:
- Request to exit motion detectors
- Request to exit pushbuttons
- Exit device hardware with extra switches for request to exit switching
- Request to exit bars with capacitance sensors
- Other sensors
- Pushbutton switches with pneumatic timers
Egress sensors and buttons or combination of these units will ensure the safety of the occupants of a secure area in the event of fire or other emergency.
