Designing and Purchasing your New Hotel Lock System

A quick FIVE STEP Process

[A] STEP ONE [ Identify the latch type ]:

Both existing and new Hotels utilize one of two 'Latch Types'. Latch types are categorized as either (1) Cylindrical or (2) Mortise. The easiest way to tell the difference is with the cylindrical lock, the latch plate or face plate on the edge of the door is about 2" long. The latch plate or face plate of the mortise lock, is approximately 8" long.

Cylindrical style latch. A cylindrical lock is one in which two holes are bored, perpendicular to one another, into the door . A large hole is bored into the door face and a smaller crossbore hole is bored into the door edge. With a cylindrical lock, the lock cylinder is in the handle. Mortise style latch - A mortise lock is one that requires a pocket 'the mortise' to be cut into the door into which the lock is to be fitted. In the mortise lock, the cylinder is above the handle on the door. A photo of a typical mechanical mortise latch style lock follows.

[B] STEP TWO [ Identify handling requirements ]:

How many Locks are required and what is the orientation of the handle? Please review the handing diagram to determine the type and quantity of door locks required.

Are you Right or Left Handling?

While facing the door from outside the room, first check if the door opens OUT or IN (doors opening IN open into the room).

Next, while facing the door from outside the room, locate the hinges of the door. Are the hinges located on the LEFT (Left Hand) or RIGHT (Right Hand).

Okay, almost done, now put it all together. For example, if the door opens IN (door opens into the room) and the door hinges (while facing the door from outside the room) are on the LEFT, the door is a LEFT HAND noted as (LH). If the door opens OUT (door opens toward the street or hallway and not into the room) and the door hinges (while facing the door from outside the room) are on the RIGHT, the door is a RIGHT HAND REVERSE noted as (RHR).

Repeat the process for each of the doors and add up the required number and type of door. (For example, a 30 room motel may have 15 LEFT HAND REVERSE (LHR) doors and 15 RIGHT HAND REVERSE (RHR) doors).

[C] STEP THREE [ Pick a lock model / card type ]:

[D] STEP FOUR [ Add software, encoders and cards ]:

Depending on your choice of lock systems add in the correct software and encoder kit and the number and type of access cards you will need to get started. Here is an example of a 30 room hotel that recently upgrading from "heavy brass keys" cylindrical locks to the MC-HCL1 locks:
